A Drought Resistant Mediterranean Country Garden
The design of a 7000m2 country garden, situated in the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca. The area was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2011 under the Cultural Landscape category. The acknowledgement of the near-perfect symbiosis between the action of human beings and nature.
Xerophytic (Drought Resistant) Gravel Garden

A steeply sloped mountainside plot with very little remaining soil was home to ancient Olive trees and grazing sheep.

The dry stone walls were restored and a layout design linking the terraces inspired by the work of 20th Century Spanish artist Joan Arp.

Mass planting of drought resistant species repeated throughout the garden give a sense of rhythm and movement.

North facing areas shaded by the walls where more moisture was available were planted with Agapanthus and Cana Lilly and Asparagus Fern.

The sunny areas, where summer temperatures can reach 40 deg C, were planted with hardy mediterranean species in a palette of whites, pinks and mauves.
